With kids in college, I learned quickly that you didn’t want to learn that someone was stranded because they couldn’t get a ride home, or worse, thought they had enough gas to drive home.

We gave our boys one of our credit cards for a while, but collecting from them was a hassle.   What became a “use if you must” card became a “use if Taco Bell is near and you and your friends are hungry” card.  Several times, the guys ended up charging more than they made that month.  You don’t want to demand money from your kid and start the cycle again, but what do you do to put some accountability in place?

That’s what is so cool about a prepaid Visa card.  If you’re going to give your child money, you can load up the card with the funds.  Using a prepaid credit card is great because they can use the card online or for those weird $2.37 charges at 7-11.   And it’s not like they can go out of control and charge more than they can repay.

You can grab one of these prepaid Visa cards today.  They’re great for employees too.  You know that if you have an employee who needs a charge card for per diem, but they maybe have some money issues that they are very awkward about asking you for an advance.  Just give them their per diem on a pre-paid card.  You can still ask (and should ask) for receipts, but you can also take the awkward situation away.

Click the link below and get a  Prepaid Visa Card – No credit check. Quick approval. Shop online, pay bills, use ATMs and use it anywhere Visa cards are used.  And the folks at Vision Prepaid tell us that they guarantee approval.

Official Star Trek Merch is Here!

The new movie is getting amazing raves.  Folks in Austin who thought they were seeing a run of TWOK ended up with Mr. Nimoy himself in the theater screening the new film.  The cast is awesome, but still pretty true to who they were, err, would become.  Because thanks to J.J. Abrams, Star Trek is young again.

And the merchandise and collectibles are out of this world!  StarTrek.com just sent us over the links to dig in to the new stuff.

Look, we know Wolverine isn’t doing so hot.  Maybe it’s Kirk, Spock and the father of Lost and Alias who wil make this summer hum.  I know where I’ll be next weekend.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - NOVEMBER 17: The Edge ...

U2 is an amazing band, perhaps the best rock act still recording and touring. But you want to see these guys now in what could be the last spectacle tour. Demand is overwhelming. In fact, our buddies at SonicClash.com told us that U2 sold a half million copies of No Line on the Horizon.     But we need to look at some cold hard facts too.

Bono at age 50 (he hits the milestone next year) is amazing.   Bono at 60 may not be touring at this level.  And don’t forget that he’s been nominated 3 times for a Nobel Peace Prize.  Making music is the way he communicates, but there is a bigger agenda here, and Bono would be the first to tell anyone that.  U2′s next album will be made after The Edge and everyone else is in their 50s.  That’s not saying that the 2010 or 2011 (or 2012…) won’t be great, but the music will undoubtedly continue changing.

Having waited until some of my favorite artists were older and could no longer hit certain notes was a mistake.  I’m glad I got to see them and wish I had seen them earlier.

Our friends at TicketsNow tell us that they have seats for U2, Britney and even sold-out Jonas Brothers shows. Click here for tickets to your favorite concert or show.

Seeing your favorite artists when they are at the height of their powers is a pretty special thing.  Don’t miss out now because for every band or singer that performs for years, there are plenty more who don’t last past an album and tour or two.

They also have a pretty cool 100% guarantee on these tickets. They’re authentic (nothing like trying to buy something on CraigsList or eBay and finding out at the door that you were stiffed), they’re refunded if the artist cancels and you get seats that most people only dream about.

Want tickets to a sold out show? Click here

We’ve posted our review of Boots for Less and found good pricing, selection and service.

But there’s one caveat before using this specialty boot retailer.  Read why our shopper had to return the boot order.

CNet, the voice of technology we always use when purchasing any electronics, loved the Asus EEE PC 900 when it was released in May.  Notebook guru Dan Ackerman showed how the Asus screen size had increased two inches while the machine stayed almost the same width through some sharp engineering.  CNet gave the slick looking white netbook a “Very Good” rating, as did 11 consumers.  Ackerman made one comment about the keyboard being small but otherwise loved the machine.

What he didn’t love — and we didn’t either — was the street price at $549.

Now, we have found an awesome coupon for you that takes the Asus down to about  half its 2008 price!

ASUS Eee PC 900 16G – Linux – Netbook – Pearl White Now only $299.99.

At $300, this Netbook is a steal.   A main article in this month’s Wired magazine describes the year of the Netbook.  I know we’ll be buying at least two at this price.  At only $300 with a 9 inch display at 16 gigabyte hard drive (solid state to boot — just like a thumb drive!), you can’t go wrong buying at least one.

We’ll be reviewing the machine and mystery shopping OnSale again while we’re at it.   Do the same because the darling of last spring isn’t going to last forever at this price when sites like CNet are touting its virtues.

Cooking.com consistently gets great marks from ratings services.   You might be thinking about a grilling pan that lets you grill your favorite foods without firing up the barbeque.   The pan’s raised ribs add beautiful charred lines to meats and simmer your food ABOVE grease rather than cooking in it.

If casseroles are in your future, consider Cooking’s 6 1/2 quart oval casserole. The secret in this cookware allows you to start your meal by searing meat inside before finishing the dish.
