The beginning of every month brings a slew of new offering.

We sat around today and compared new, clearance and refurb desktop computers from HP, Toshiba, Fujitsu and many more famous makers. We also looked at some of our favorite clearance sites including Buy.com and JR Music World.

We’re geeks. We even set up a spreadsheet to compare RAM, prices and features. After all, every decent shopping site has a compare feature, but how many have a compare across multiple sites? Since they don’t, we used Chrome and Google Docs to build our own.

Sue us. It was a late Friday afternoon at the end of the month when we had already met the sales budget.

Then we found her.

This is one hot computer.  Even CNet, which often doesn’t recommend anyone who isn’t advertising heavily that week, couldn’t exactly slam it.  That’s because the HP Pavilion 6214 we found has a 8 gig of RAM, 1 terabyte hard drive and Windows System 7.  All for less than $400

So it’s a refurb unit.  Who cares?  Refurbs work well, which is why they’re so popular.    How hot is this Pavilion?  We bought one.  You should too.

Four hundred dollar desktops sell out fast.  Jump on this one by clicking the link below.

I came away from a recent trade show convinced more than ever that iContact was not only a worthy challenger to Constant Contact andother email services, but may actually be a better value.

There is no denying that trying the service is easy. You don’t even need a credit card to start using iContact. And the trial itself is nothing to sneeze at:

  • You can load up to 250 of your contacts
  • You can send up to 500 messages
  • And you have 15 days to play with the system and learn how to most effectively use it.

When I first started looking at, they had a huge number of free templates available — time tested formats so you don’t need to be a designer.  Since then, they’ve added dozens more templates and now have more than 300 different looks.   You won’t have trouble finding a template.  In fact, you’ll spend time choosing among the best of them.

The one area where iContact totally beats Constant Contact is survey creation.  When I’ve sent surveys in ConstantContact, I had to buy their survey package.   I get the survey options free in iContact, and the monthly cost to use iContact is 50% lower — less than $10/month.

I was talking recently with a friend who runs a small  business and asked about the two.  Trying iContact is a no-brainer, I told him.  You won’t have to give your credit card, you get more features and you get a free two week trial with hundreds of emails to test.  How could you not try the new kid in town?

National Sewing Month

By cj · Comments (0)

Sewing, one of the greenest of all crafts, is a little more environmentally friendly now.

September is Nati0nal Sewing Month.   This celebration, authorized by a proclamation from then-President Ronald Reagan, is nearing its 30th anniversary.

This year’s theme is “Reuse, Remake, Restyle” — perfect for smart sewers who know how to repair perfectly good clothes that have seen a little misfortune and more adventurous sewing stars who create entirely new outfits from fabric, creativity and time.

Celebrate National Sewing Month with Joann.com.   Joann has a new community for all crafters, including those celebrating National Sewing Month.  There are special deals throughout the site.   You can even save 40% off any regularly-priced items at the site with this code:

40% Off the Regular Price of One Item at Joann.com (Code: SEPTA940)
